Fast, accurate fence

The Kreg PRS1040 has a t-square style fence that slides along the table easily, always staying perfectly parallel to the miter slot. With an adjustable measuring scale at the near end of the fence, you never have to measure bit to fence. Simply lock the fence down using the scale, and you’re guaranteed that the fence will be that precise distance from the bit center, and parallel to the miter slot all the way down. A clamp on the near side and a screw on the far side lock down the fence without those tiny movements that will throw off your precise position. For even more exactitude, the optional micro-adjuster wheel (less than $15) adds the ability to bump your fence in increments as small as thousandths of an inch, all the time maintaining that rigid alignment.

The fence faces are independent, and with a little set-up you can use your router table as a vertical jointer. The outfeed fence has spacing rods that you can use to offset the fence by 1/16″ or 1/32″. Calculate the fence offset with the outfeed offset and bit width, and voila! You’ve got a vertical jointer.

Dust collection

The fence on the Kreg PRS1040 is completely enclosed. Not only does this make it sturdier, it also makes dust collection a cinch. The port is located a little ways down the fence from the bit, which means that more dust ends up on your floor but that the fence integrity isn’t compromised at its thinnest point. Any vacuum will keep chips and dust off of your table surface, and a good shop vac will keep it off your floor, too.

Durable steel stand

The Kreg PRS1040 uses the Kreg Universal Steel Stand, which is all steel for strength and durability. The table has struts on every side to prevent wobble, and you can easily enclose the underside of the table with plywood for storage. There are also two cross struts right underneath the surface on either side of the insert plate that provide extra support for the area that’s most likely to warp. The height is adjustable from 31″ to 36″ and each leg can be leveled to guarantee a completely flat surface on the most uneven floors. Add a set of dual locking casters (under $45) for ultimate portability.

11 contact points for levels

When routing, you’ve got to have a completely level surface, otherwise the bit depth will be wrong and your piece can get stuck on uneven edges. The Kreg PRS1040 has not one but two bottom-up levelers and a lock-down screw at each corner of the insert plate. In addition, the reducing rings have three level/lock-down screws of their own. With 11 fully-adjustable points of contact, your table will feel like one continuous surface all the way to the bit and beyond.

Practically universal compatibility

The Kreg PRS1040 comes with a 9 1/4″ x 11 3/4″ x 3/8″ phenolic insert plate that can be drilled to work with any router. (Or you can have them drill it for you.) What is a phenolic insert plate? It’s one made of the same stuff as billiard balls and firearm magazines – tough, durable, and heat-resistant. It’s lighter than aluminum and easier to drill, while maintaining its rigidity. This table comes with two reducing rings – 2″ and 1 13/64″ – that fit standard Porter-Cable style bushings.

Other features

Some other features that make the Kreg PRS1040 a pleasure to route with are the MDF top with an Easy-Slide Micro-Dot skin laminate surface on which your work will simply glide. MDF also absorbs more vibrations than a lot of other table top materials and it’s quieter too. There’s a brass peg to fit into the insert plate for a freehand routing guide. Plus, since you know the fence is always square, you can use the miter slot freely for featherboards or gauges without worrying about offset.
