For woodworkers, there’s hardly any tool that tops a router table for all around usefulness. You can buy all sorts of router tables at your local home improvement store, or you can make one to fit your exact needs and budget in just a few hours.

Do you want one that folds up for storage or one that stays set up all the time? The former is very convenient if you don’t have a lot of space the latter is more stable and is ready to go to work whenever you want.

Choosing the right wood for making your table is important. For a longer lasting table, choose a strong wood like teak. For the budget conscious, choose a less expensive wood. The best router table is generally the one that combines strength and stability with a reasonable build cost.

Your router table plans will probably call for you to construct the base of the table first. It is very important to make sure the base is absolutely level and strong enough to support the table top plus the wood you are using in your project.

Of course you can build the table top and router table fence yourself, or you can take a short cut and buy the top already made. Look for router table plans that can accommodate either one. Your top should be at least two feet by three feet. The top should have a laminated surface and a router table fence, channel guides, and measuring guides.

Also check for router table plans that include such labor saving devices as a dust-collecting cabinet or a vacuum to collect saw dust. By checking out a number of router table plans you’re sure to come up with one you can make yourself and use for years.
